Tools for Community Assessments

John Dracup

&

Tim Wellman

'How to' guides for program assessment, evaluation, maintenance, and repairs.

WASH systems operate in remote areas where there aren't proper supply chains, and in rural areas where communities haven't been trained properly. Many organizations will focus more on "hardware" than "software" and since water and sanitation systems always require on-going maintenance and repairs, many WASH systems quickly fall into disrepair. The importance of assessments, monitoring and evaluation, on-going training, and other importance tips for doing, maintaining and evaluating WASH systems will be shared.

Disease Prevention and Treatment

Max Perel-Slater

&

Kate Harawa

Implementation strategies for disease prevention.

Fighting Disease seems intuitively related to WASH, but when there is a lack of health facilities, lack of training, shortage of WASH services, supplies, and maintenance, even the facilities that should be improving or protecting health become places of disease transmission. Further, many medicines or vaccinations are not available when there aren't safe water, proper sanitaton or good hygiene practices. In this track, the presenters will discuss in more depth successful implementation strategies for disease prevention.

Tools for Disaster Response

Christina Chanes

&

Joshua Knight

Critical role of WASH in disaster response implementation.

The world has seen natural disasters occurring more frequently and with more intensity. Rotarians are wanting to efficiently and effectively respond to such disasters. However, the world has learned that the proper response is needed so people affected get the best and quickest help possible to deal with immediate and longer-term needs. There is a big difference between the immediate needs to save lives and help with re-building and Rotary clubs need to take their lead from the local professionals so a bad situation isn't made worst. Many of the short and long-term needs are around WASH services. After explaining what is needed after a disaster, an example of a successful intervention will be shared.
