Breakout Session 2
Track 1

Disease Prevention & Treatment
Braimah Apambire
&
Claire Wang
Sustainable WASH services for disease prevention.
Fighting Disease seems intuitively related to WASH, but when there is a lack of health facilities, lack of training, shortage of WASH services, supplies, and maintenance, even the facilities that should be improving or protecting health become places of disease transmission. Further, many medicines or vaccinations are not available when there aren't safe water, proper sanitation or good hygiene practices. Examples of both good and poor practices will be discussed, including sustainable WASH services for disease prevention.
Track 2

Education & Literacy
Erica Gwynn
&
Nancy Gilbert
Implementing WASH in schools.
Supporting Education is important for the long-term development of communities and countries. Without education, people are stuck in their lower economic development status. Many Rotarians and clubs focus on education, but an important ingredient to getting children to come to school and stay in school are safe drinking water, proper sanitation, and on-going hygiene education. WASH services are especially important for girls that are reaching puberty and require clean, private facilities at school. Otherwise, girls miss school or drop out. In this track, the presenters will discuss best practices for implementing WASH in schools.
Track 3

Economic Financing Development
Eddy Perez
&
Garrett Mason
Tools and training to advance sustainable economic development.
One Rotary Area of Focus is Growing Local Economies. Economic and Community Development are related to financing, supply chains, creating WASH enterprises, and as such are all strategies to help projects grow into programs and to help create sustainable WASH programs. Whether the model is based on community-based tariffs or fees or an individual, co-op or organization generates income by providing materials, equipment or services, and income generation helps to create sustainability. In addition, human-centered approachs that have community members sharing their ideas and working together is also part of the strategy to create sustainbility. The presenters will discuss tools and training opportunites available to advance sustainable economic development.
Track 4

Maternal &
Child Health
Peter Van Arsdale
&
Mike Paddock
The role of WASH in improving mother and child health.
Saving Mothers and Children is another Rotary Area of Focus. WASH services are integral to protecting mothers, and especially young children's health and lives. The discussion will go from a high-level explanation about why Rotary focused on Mothers and Children to and the role WASH plays for improving mother and child health.
