Economic Financing Development

Michael MacCarthy

&

Greg Lestikow

Financing mechanisms for sustainable sanitation markets.

One Rotary Area of Focus is Growing Local Economies. Economic and Community Development are related to financing, supply chains, creating WASH enterprises, and as such are all strategies to help projects grow into programs and to help create sustainable  WASH programs. Whether the model is based on community-based tariffs or fees or an individual, co-op or organization generates income by providing materials, equipment or services, and income generation helps to create sustainability. The presenters will provide both general background to how economic development contributes to sustainability and specific examples or case studies, and discuss financing mechanisms for sustainable sanitation markets.

Education & Literacy

Carolyn Johnson

&

Patty Hall

WASH services in schools to improve educational outcomes.

Supporting Education is important for the long-term development of communities and countries. Without education, people may remain stuck in their lower economic development status. Many Rotarians and clubs focus on education, but an important ingredient to getting children to come to school and stay in school are safe drinking water, proper sanitation, and on-going hygiene education. WASH services are especially important for girls that are reaching puberty and require clean, private facilities at school. There are many examples of the close connection between WASH and improved student performance and improved health. Students also become drivers of change when they return to their villages. The presenters will discuss WASH services in schools to improve educational outcomes.

Environment

George McGraw

&

Bert Garcia

Water supply and quality in Tribal nations.

Supporting the Environment is the newest Area of Focus. So much that happens in supporting the environment is related to WASH. The lack of access to a sustainable and clean water supply is also a factor in why people are displaced or have poor health issues.  People from lower income or vulnerable populations are usually the first ones to suffer when the environment is polluted or disrupted or lack access to clean water supplies. The presenters will discuss issues and solutions to providing clean and reliable water supplies to in Tribal nations, from the local to Federal perspective.

Peace & Conflict Resolution

Randy Butler,

Al Jubitz,

& Fatima Taha

WASH as a solution for conflict resolution.

Promoting Peace is an area that isn't always seen as relating to WASH. There are, however, examples where communities or countries that have improved relationships by working together to share water, keep their water supply safe, and share their knowledge and supplies with others who are at risk from polluted water, shortage of supply or risk of contaminated water from poor sanitation systems. Examples will be shared where WASH services have brought people together instead of being a source of friction and conflict.
